The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) is moving apace with its preparations for International Cards and 51-year-old Cuban Boxing Coach Francisco Hernandez Roldan, is playing an integral role in how Guyanese Boxers perform on the International stage.
Roland, in his second stint here, is responsible for overseeing Boxers that represented Guyana at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, South American Youth Games, Pan Am Qualifiers and the Goodwill tournament that was hosted here.
Last Sunday evening’s U-16 and Juniors Boxing Championships at the National Gymnasium was used to prepare the young pugilists for Caribbean Schoolboys & Junior Championships set for Guyana from August 16-18.
President of GBA Steven Ninvalle explained that the Championships are very important for Guyana’s preparation for the Caribbean Championships. The competition in this year’s Caribbean School Boys & Juniors’ tournament is expected to be fierce since the Dominican Republic and Porto Rico who, along with Cuba, are considered the power houses in Latin America Amateur Boxing, have been invited to match gloves with their other Caribbean counterparts.
“Yes, I think it served its purpose since it’s just a start, it’s a series of events that we have encompassing the preparations for the International tournament. I have only just received a detailed plan from the Cuban Coach which I have shared with all the Coaches we have. We will make additions or deletions and then put it into practice” informed Ninvalle.
Inviting Porto Rico and the Dominican Republic should aid in the development since they should provide tougher opposition for the Guyanese pugilists who usually dominate the English speaking Caribbean.
The next National Schoolboys/Juniors is set for May 8 while he Andrew ‘Six heads’ Lewis National Novices Championship which is scheduled for the last Friday, Saturday and Sunday in May. (Sean Devers)
