From left, Jamal Angus, Brian Nedd (Banks Beer Manager) Peter Green (GRFU President), Troy Peters (Banks Communications Manager) Gavin Deodan of Banks DIH and Richard Staglon of the Green Machine, pose for a photo at the handing over yesterday.
Once again, Banks DIH, through their Banks Beer brand have thrown support behind the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) for the ‘Green Machine’s crucial match against Guadeloupe for the Rugby Americas North (RAN) South Zone final which is schedule to scrum off at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground, Carifesta Avenue and JB Singh, Highway.
However, the recent rainfall may force the venue to be changed and as of yesterday evening, GRFU President Peter Green, related that the GDF venue was waterlogged. However, Green explained that there are alternate venues that can be used and in the event that there is a change, same will be communicated to fans with the help of the media.
Panthers Rugby Club’s Jamal Angus has retained his position in the team as Captain but Coach Kenneth Grant Stuart, who was present at the handing over ceremony at Banks DIH’s Thirst Park, yesterday, noted that he is leaving the final squad announcement until tomorrow with three overseas players scheduled to arrive last evening.
Angus noted that, “We have really settled down for a more structured and patterned play. In the past we played a more free flow, individual rugby that has proven to not work for us. I believe once we stick to our pattern on Saturday (tomorrow) we will be victorious.”
The game will be officiated by Referee Fernando Garcia Valdes of Mexico while Jason Brewer of Barbados is the Match Commissioner. Guyana will provide the Substitution Controllers and Assistant Referees.
Should Guyana get a likely victory over Guadeloupe, making its debut appearance in the RAN Championship, the Green Machine will then host North Zone winners Bermuda next month for the RAN overall title.
There will be no promotion or relegation after these matches since 2020 is expected to be the first qualifying round for Rugby World Cup 2023 and as such, only full members of World Rugby will be able to compete in 2020.
The 27-member training squad includes the following players: Jason Tyrell, Rickford Cummings, Rondel ‘Bull’ McArthur, Jose Felicien, Kevon David, Richard Staglon, Jamal Angus, Vallon Adams, Ryan Gonsalves, Godfrey Brooms, Avery Corbin, Peabo Hamilton, Lancelot Adonis, Jamal Darrel, Joseph Rahaman, Cyon Kitt, Phabian Joseph, Kiefer Lopz, Selwyn Henry, Osie Mckenzie, Ronaldo Mayers, David Garrett, Ryan Dey, Glenroy Pool, Cloyd Prowell, Jamal Junior and Sean Philips.
