han a month after 64-year-old Geewan Baldeo was killed in a hit-and-run accident at Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara, his family is seeking help from the public in locating the driver who was behind the wheel of a yellow Toyota IST motorcar.
Kaieteur News understands that Baldeo also known as ‘Dado’ and ‘One-Hand’, a father of four, left his Lot 133 Grove Village home at around 05:00am on Sunday, March 3, for a routine morning walk.
About 10 minutes later, villagers rushed to his home and informed his relatives that he had been ‘hit by something’ and was left lying in a pool of blood on the roadway. The elderly man had celebrated his 64th birthday a few days before his demise.
According to the dead man’s daughter Amanda, she was in Berbice attending a funeral when she received the devastating news. She said that her father was pronounced dead at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
Amanda related that due to the time the accident occurred, no one saw what transpired and that the family was only able to get an image of a car after reviewing CCTV footage from buildings in proximity to the scene.
She added, “People didn’t know what hit he down. They say is something big. But when we look at the video, we see this yellow car hit my father down and drive away.” The woman related that the accident was reported to the police and they are still awaiting word on the investigation.
Police have confirmed receiving a report of the fatal accident and have indicated that an investigation is still ongoing.
The woman opined that her father might still have been alive if the driver had stopped and rendered assistance. As for now, the family has published an advertisement in the daily newspapers seeking assistance from anyone in locating the driver.
In the advertisement, the family said that Baldeo “Was knocked down and left to die in front of Sheriff Restaurant on Grove Public Road by a yellow Toyota IST taxi. The family is still waiting for justice from the Guyana Police Force.”
In the advertisement, there is also a picture of the side of the car. “Anyone with information can contact Amanda on 592-645-4321 or the nearest police station. All information will be treated with the strictest of confidence.”
It is still unclear which taxi service base the car is attached to, since there was no logo visible from footage captured by the CCTV cameras. The cameras were also unable to capture the car’s licence plate.
The man’s grieving daughter is pleading with the driver to come forward and make a report. “How can you knock down another human and just drive away. You need to come forward and tell us what happened.”
