The stage is set for tonight’s grand finale of the Linden Town Week Mayor’s Cup football championship where the top ranked Eagles United are to face Haynes & Lewis Winners Connection and the third place playoff game will pit Capital FC against Net Rockers at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
The night’s proceedings will see from 18:00hrs a Linden select Under 20 team facing the national Under 17 squad in what will be an interesting encounter as the Linden side will seek to show their talent in this warm up game.
Eagles United are confident that they can bag yet another title and their top players will include their captain Colwyn ‘Buck’ Drakes and Donovan Francis who are in rich form, while their supporting cast will be ready to ensure they put away the challenge
of the Haynes and Lewis Winners Connection which will depend on the likes of Shaquille Frank leading their strike line.
To reach the final it went down to penalties to decide that the Winners Connection would end the hopes of Net Rockers 4-3 following a 1-1 draw.
This was after Shaquille Frank sent Winners Connection into the lead with a 32nd minute strike, but Shane Luckie knotted the scores in the 36th minute and that tussle was back and forth without any decision.
It was finally decided from the penalty spot and by then Frank had switched positions and went into the citadel where he heroically stopped a shot that would send his team through by a 4-3 margin.
The second game was a lively affair with Capital FC showing great promise.
But the heart of the Eagles United side was evident and while Eagles took the lead through Donovan Francis in the 16th minute and Duquan Hercules’ free kick tied this up for Capital FC in the 32nd minute, the game was tense as both sides sought to gain the advantage.
But a double by Colwyn ‘Buck’ Drake would separate the sides for good when the banged home in the 86th to give Eagles a 2-1 advantage and one minute later another shot by Drakes in the 87thminute sealed the 3-1 victory.
