Although the State provides lawyers for a murder accused who cannot afford to hire legal representatives, 51- year-old Gavin Graham who is accused of killing his ex-lover, has refused the services of three such lawyers sent to visit him at the prison.
Graham is accused of the January 3, 2015 murders of his ex-lover Tabola Abrams, 39, and her 68-year-old stepfather Clifford Sampson who died because of injuries they received in a fire, which destroyed a house at Lot 636 ‘C’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
According to reports, Graham set fire to the two-storey house, which was at the time occupied by Abrams, her paramour and stepfather and about 10 other individuals including children, after the woman ended their relationship.
Graham was brought to court yesterday and again he asked for his trial to be adjourned for another three months to allow his relatives to pool monies to hire his desired counsel. At this point, Justice Singh sought to remind him that he had already spent four years in prison, and inquired if he had liked the prison setting.
Graham responded in the negative. He said that he is not mindful of any State-assigned lawyers representing him. He admitted that the lawyers visited him at the prison. One of those same lawyers was even present in court yesterday just in case the accused had a change of heart.
But Graham held out that he wants to hire his desired legal representative. He explained that he cannot afford to retain a lawyer at this moment, but if granted time, his family will be able to do so.
In the end, Justice Singh told Graham that the court does not work to his timing, and that his trial is due for commencement. As such, the Judge granted the murder accused until next week Wednesday, April 24, to retain a lawyer of his choice.
Whether or not he does this, Justice Singh indicated that the court will empanel a jury to begin the trial, since lawyers are being provided to him by the State for free.
The Prosecutors in this case are Tuanna Hardy, Teriq Mohamed and Abigail Gibbs.
