Guyana will take on Canada in their opening game of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional U19 T20 tournament at Gilbert Park today. Following that fixture which is set to commence at 09:30hrs, the Guyanese will journey to the National Cricket Centre in Couva where they will face host Trinidad and Tobago at 14:30hrs.
The squad which departed yesterday will be led by Shabika Gajnabi, while Mandy Mangru will serve as her deputy. The Guyanese unit includes five players with senior team experience; Gajnabi, Mangru, Cherry Ann Fraser, Afruica Gentle and Lafona Gilgeous.
The squad reads; Shabika Gajnabi (C), Mandy Mangru (VC), Cherry-Ann Fraser, Lafona Gilgeous, Ashmini Munisar, Casey Charles, Afruica Gentle, Omadevi Matadin, Sarah Amin, Lisa Charles, Annalisa De’ Aguair, Shemika Edwards, Nivina Ramnauth and Bibi Adram. Bharat Mangru (Coach) and Tremaine Smartt (Manager).
Tomorrow, Guyana will play Windward Islands at 09:30hrs before facing Barbados at 14:30hrs at Gilbert Park. The tournament will take a break on Friday when the teams will benefit from free development sessions by the CWI at Metro Hotel.
On Saturday, Guyana and Jamaica will battle at 09:30hrs at Couva. Following that contest, the semi finals will be played at 14:30hrs at Couva and Gilbert Park, while the final will be contested on Sunday at Couva.
Gajnabi told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that she is confident that the team can go all the way. She said that having five players in the team who were part of the Guyana side in the recently concluded CWI Women’s Super 50 and T20 Blaze that was held here, is definitely a boost. Gajnabi stated that the team is a balanced one and posses the fire power to take the title. She said that getting the basics right and play as a team are among key factors. Guyana won the tournament in 2017.
