Former West Indies star batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul struck a fluent century to hand Neville Sarjoo Over-40 side a comfortable seven-wicket victory over East Coast Demerara Masters when the teams collided on Sunday last in a T20 fixture played in Memory of the late Neville Sarjoo.
Narendra Sarwan and former Guyana wicket-keeper batsman Sheik Mohamed added 35 for the opening stand after East Coast Demerara Masters took first strike at the Everest Cricket Club. Teddy Dindyal knocked back the stumps of Mohamed for nine before Sarwan and Arthur Duke put on 70 for the second wicket on a slow pitch. Duke hit three fours and four towering sixes before he was stumped off Mark Pereira for 41.
Sarwan timed the ball well as he continued to gather runs and added a further 65 with Winston London. The right-handed Sarwan hit eight fours and three sixes before he was lbw to off-spinner Johnny Azeez for 73, while London stroked four fours and one six in scoring 39. Azeez pegged back the scoring somewhat in the later stages as East Coast Demerara Masters amassed a challenging 193-6. Azeez grabbed 4-23, while there was one wicket each for Pereira and Dindyal.
Opener Navindra Persaud was lbw to medium pacer Ramnaresh Ramkarran for one as Neville Sarjoo Over-40 lost their first wicket with the score on nine. However, Chanderpaul and Rohan Sarjoo added 78 for the second wicket to steady the chase with sensible batting. Chanderpaul picked the gaps with precision as he found the boundary ropes at will and rotated the strike nicely. Sarjoo hit one four and two sixes before he was bowled Duke for 17, while Chanderpaul added a further 81 for the third wicket with Surendra Hiralall as they ensured the required run rate was above par.
Chanderpaul’s timing was impeccable as he clobbered 19 fours and four maximums before he retired when on 116 with 12 needed. Hiralall remained unbeaten on 42 with four fours and one six, while former Guyana all-rounder Arjune Nandu made three not out as Neville Sarjoo Over-40 finished on 194-3 in 15 overs.
