Night one of the Bartica Easter Regatta knock-out Futsal competition which has a first place prize of $200,000 was epic in proportions as 20 teams battled their hearts and soul out but only ten (10) had the resolve to advance.
Following a colorful march past at the Bartica Community Center Basketball Court, venue for the tournament, where His Worship Mayor Gifford Marshall took the salute from the teams accompanied by Organiser of the Sports Programme, Michael Dos Santos, the teams got down to business with the first match between Rivers View ‘B’ and Karrau, the former firing their way to a comfortable 4-1 win.
The largest margin of victory on the night was recorded by Rivers View ‘A’ which softened Hard Ball 9-0, the first helmet-trick of the tournament blasted in by Andrew Simmons with his teammate Omario Lake tucking in a hat-trick as well as Skill Kings’ Darren Troyer.
Emulating Simmons’ feat later in the night was Shameer Mentore of Falmouth and that was not the end of such scoring as Sese Norville also made his presence felt when he fired in four of his own in leading Vision to a come from behind win.
Bartica Mayor Gifford Marshall officially kicks off the Easter Regatta Futsal tournament in the presence of players from Rivers View ‘B’ (right) and Karrau.
The only team that was not required to build a sweat to advance to night two which was contested last night was Beacons; their opponents, Ballers United never showed up.
Mayor Marshall in declaring the tournament open before doing the ceremonial kickoff thanked all the teams for accepting the challenge to be a part of the tournament which not only showcases the abounding talent in Bartica, but affords all the teams the chance to win the prize monies and trophies on offer.
The first placed team will be rewarded with $200,000 with the losing finalist walking away with $100,000. Winner of the third place match will collect $50,000. There will also be a trophy for the highest Goal Scorer and the Most Valuable Player of the tournament which will end tomorrow night.
