DEAR EDITOR,
Paragraph 7 of Kaieteur News Editorial “What took City Hall so long” stated “Citizens have to decide if they will continue to carry the unfair load and allow others to get a free ride”.
The Mayor and now the press are screaming for action. But citizens have been bawling and demanding action from the City Council for years. I am living in Bel Air Park and I can tell you that as soon as the rain drizzles the area is flooded. This is a residential area that is paying the highest taxes. But what do we get for it? All the kokers are either silted up or have collapsed. The roads in the cul-de-sacs have never been done. The huge garbage trucks with new drivers are breaking the concrete drains that residents have put in at their own expense. Our taxes are diverted to other areas. Again, what are we getting for our tax dollars?
Let me tell you. There is a crisis developing at Rupa Place. The garbage truck buried the concrete rail into the mouth of the culvert months ago. After repeated pleas to the City Engineer, Mr. Boston; the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Mentore we finally resorted to the Mayor.
A tractor was sent to pull out the concrete slab but no water is passing through the culvert. The culvert has collapsed. With the May/June rains coming, all bottom flats will be flooded.
I am hereby giving notice to the City Council that should our bottom flats be flooded we will sue the Council for damages for their negligence and incompetence. I am hereby also inviting them to come and inspect all the appliances and household equipment so that they can be aware that the cost in damages will be well above what it will cost them to fix the problem.
Citizens have rights also. What is taking City Hall so long to fix this simple problem? Mr. Mayor we need a new culvert before the rains come.
Yours respectfully
Hema Persaud
