Justice Jo-ann Barlow presiding in the murder trial of Mohanball of Williamsburg, Corentyne, Berbice at the Berbice High Court yesterday, upheld a defence no-case submission and directed the mixed jury to return with a not guilty verdict.
The two men, Ravendra Ramnauth and Rocky Ramu, after the judge’s ruling walked out from the courtroom and embraced relatives as free men.
The trial which lasted for several weeks saw 10 witnesses testifying.
Ramnauth and Ramu were represented by the state provided attorney Sasha Roberts while the prosecution was led by Prosecutor Mandel Moore.
The men, as they made their way out, expressed thanks to their attorney. “She did a great job”.
Ramu said, “I feel great; I know how the case was going, I know I would have been freed because I am innocent.”
Ramnauth who could not hold back his tears, said he feels extremely joyful to have gained his freedom back into society. He also thanked the Almighty and expressed his eagerness to see his two children and wife.
“I just want to go back out there and do the things I am supposed to do, the right things. I come to jail when my wife was pregnant and my children are 9 and two-years-old. I ain’t see them for the year yet so I am happy to go home,” he said.
On December 29, 2016 the body of 49-year-old Mohanball, of Williamsburg Village, Corentyne was discovered by children who were playing in the area. His remains were noticed by one of the youths who happened to be lingering near the trench in the village not far from where Mohanball lived. The lad rushed to the sister of the dead man and informed her of what he saw.
Raywattie Fraser said, then, that her husband ventured to the area to confirm whether the report was true. His worst fears were confirmed when he saw the man’s lifeless body partially submerged in the trench, with what appeared to be marks of violence.
A post mortem examination that was conducted on the body was inconclusive. Ramu and Ramnauth were arrested on January 6, 2017 after eyewitnesses told police that Mohanball was engaged in a heated argument with the duo while they were imbibing.
The argument led to a physical altercation and the eyewitnesses had claimed that they saw the two men beating Mohanball and later dumping his body in the trench.
