In the column, “They are coming…are we prepared” (KN, 09th April 2019), Lincoln Lewis makes the point that “foreigners” are coming to take over our resources especially “oil”. Moreover, that Guyana is on the cusp of economic greatness.
Such mindless fear mongering of “foreigners” (although Lincoln Lewis did not say who exactly “they” were except Brazilians and Chinese) speaks of a convoluted mind who may be living behind closed doors.
Since there are some Guyanese who share his warp views then I suggest they band together and develop Guyana’s finite resources. Oh wait, they cannot as they lack the skills and finances to do so.
It is true that companies, regardless of if they are “foreign” or “local”, will attempt to maximise their profits. However, there are benefits of “foreign” companies developing Guyana’s resources in that they bring in technology, skills and finance.
As for Guyana being on the cusp of economic greatness…GET REAL!
Guyanese, 5 or 10 years from now, will be looking at Guyana’s oil wealth and lamenting how come they are not enjoying “The Good Life”. Much like what happened when we had other resources like sugar, gold and timber.
Guyana, with a population of under one million people, should have been economically great by now. What happened?
I’ll tell you what happened. Politics happened and destroyed a prosperous Guyana. Politics in Guyana became more about enriching ourselves (on all sides of the political divide) and associates rather than working for the benefits of all. As well as, now that many Guyanese have migrated with some sending back remittances to their families and friends, some Guyanese feel that they do not need to work.
If Guyanese are serious and want to become economically empowered (Economically Great) then I suggest that Guyanese look seriously at job creation to drive down the unemployment rate. Oh wait, that has not happened under the David Granger APNU+AFC Government. And, it is not likely to happen as there is no job creation strategy in Guyana.
Understanding whose role it is to create jobs is central to a job creation strategy. Is it The Government? Is it The Private Sector? If it is The Private Sector then the Government needs to give the Private Sector the tools necessary to create jobs, namely TAX REDUCTION.
If you want to “push-back” against the tide of “foreign” companies then you would need to develop Local Guyanese skills so that they can exploit Guyana’s Resources and Opportunities.
Yours faithfully
Sean Ori
