Guyana’s Bantamweight representative; Keevin Allicock, at the ongoing American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) Pan American games qualifiers that is being held in Nicaragua, was denied a chance of fighting for a place in the semi final of the qualifiers on Monday after a questionable decision by the match supervisor which goes against the new rules of the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
Allicock lost by walk over to Alexy De Cruz of Dominican Republic after the fight supervisor deemed his vest (colour) inappropriate for competition. Allicock, who was scheduled to box out of the red corner, was attired in a red and black vest.
One hour before the quarterfinal matchup against the Dominican, he was inspected and given clearance by the International Technical Officer (ITO). The Guyanese was subsequently allowed into the ring by the referee who saw nothing wrong with his attire but, the Supervisor intervened just before the start of the fight with the claim of inappropriate attire and the young man was given a meager minute (60 seconds) to leave the ring, go to the changing room and return, “Properly attired”.
Upon his return it was deemed that he lost by walk over. A protest was immediately filed but the supervisor remained
steadfast and unflinching.
The new rules of AIBA 48.3.4 state that a boxer can compete in his national colours; red and black are colours of our Guyana national flag; the Golden Arrowhead.
In a correspondence to Kaieteur Sport, the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) President, Steve Ninvalle, condemned the ruling of the supervisor, describing it as, “Unjust, unreasonable, unsportsmanlike, excessive, and unwarranted and that which goes against the grain of what the new AIBA is promoting. In my personal capacity as president of the GBA and Chairman of the Caribbean Steering Committee (CSS), I have dispatched protest to both the Americas Boxing Confederation (AMBC) and AIBA for this ruling to be overturned and expect a favourable response.
