Works on Berbice synthetic track moving apaceYearend deadline in the pipeline
Minister Norton Examines ongoing works on the Synthetic track in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Works on the international standard synthetic track at Burnham Park in New Amsterdam, East Berbice, Region 6 are moving apace and the facility should be complete by year-end. Those were the words of Minister of Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Sports Dr. George Norton.
The eight-lane 400-metre track, when completed, will benefit hundreds of athletes within the East Berbice-Corentyne Region and other parts of Guyana and also provide job opportunities.
During a visit to the facility on Thursday last, Assistant Director of Sport, Melissa Dow-Richardson disclosed that the project which is divided, is into part two: “What we are working on right now is the filling of the materials and ensuring that the retaining wall is there. There is also asphalting, and drainage works that need to be done. When that is completed, we can go into phase four which would be the laying of the synthetic track.”

filling materials. We have completed the blinding for the entire track, and we have started the base, which will be completed on or before the end of the month.” Kandasammy added that simultaneously they are working on the upright walls, which will be done before the first fortnight in May.
Meanwhile, Minister of Social Cohesion, who also has responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. George Norton said: “I am satisfied, with what I see on the ground including the projections and timeline…. I am looking forward to the day when we can actually come and walk on that synthetic track.”
The project is being carried out by BK International and supervised by German Company BSW Regupol.
