Newcomers to the Bartica Football Association (BFA), Agatash United squandered numerous chances to make their mark when they went down to powerhouse Beacons Football Club, 2-1 on Friday last when play in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) / BFA Senior League continued at the Bartica Secondary School Ground.
Agatash United’s loss was gain enough for Beacons to launch themselves to the top of the points table with 12 from four matches. Their only blemish came in the form of a loss to Potaro Strikers in their opening game.
But on a steamy afternoon, facing a young and promising Agatash United, Beacons overcame several scares to lift maximum points by way of goals off the boots of Whitney Welcome and Shameer Mentore who opened the scoring for Beacons in the 21st minute, Cleveland Collison answered at the other end of the field for Agatash United, ten minutes later.
A hard-fought battle ensued to the end, but it was their experienced striker, Whitney Welcome who struck it home for Beacons in the 60th minute. Play in the league will continue tomorrow when Rivers View (second place in the standings) matches skills with Wolves United FC.
On Tuesday at the same venue, Lazio will take on Agatash United.
