The development of Berbice Cricket continues at a rapid rate with the hosting of numerous Cricket Tournaments at the Junior and Senior levels. The Berbice Cricket Board on Thursday last launched another Tournament at the Second Division level for teams in the Upper Corentyne area. The Tournament is being sponsored by the Guyana National Newspapers Limited with support from the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS.
BCB President Hilbert Foster stated at the simple launching ceremony at the GNNL Head Office, that a total of 24 Teams would participate in the historic Tournament. It is the first time that the popular 100 Balls version would be played in the Upper Corentyne area. Foster stated that the Berbice Cricket Board since 2018 has been hosting cricket in the Sub-areas as part of its effort to promote the game at the grassroot level. Apart from the Upper Corentyne area, similar tournaments are being played in West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje and Lower Corentyne. The Berbice Cricket Board President hailed the outstanding work of the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association and stated that cricket in the Sub-Association was on the move. The Berbice Cricket Board he stated was delighted with the work of the Dennis De Andrade led Upper Corentyne Cricket Association which is organising cricket at the Schools, Junior and Senior levels.
The twenty four Teams that would play in the Tournament are:
Radha Krishna Academy, Crabwood Creek Sports Club, All Family CWC, Skeldon Titans Cricket Club, Bomb Squad, CWC, Dukestown Warriors Cricket Club, Scottsburg United Cricket Club, No. 73 Warriors Cricket Club, No. 72 All Stars Cricket Club, No. 70 M.Y.O Cricket Club, No. 72 Cut and Load Cricket Club, No. 69 Vikings Cricket Club, No. 71 Sports Club Cricket Club, No. 70 Spartans Cricket Club, No. 70 Young Blood Cricket Club, No. 69 Red Rose Cricket Club, No. 68 Turn Team Cricket Club, No. 66 Giants, No. 48 Challengers Cricket Club, Yakusari Carib Cricket Club, No. 43 Scorpios Cricket Club, Yakusari Horizon Cricket Club, No. 68 Darkenders Cricket Club and No. 64 Fighting Marines.
Foster noted that when his administration took over the Berbice Cricket Board, Cricket was on the decline but over the last twelve months, the Berbice Cricket Board has raised over $13M in cash and kind. The end result, Foster proudly stated is that over 40 Tournaments have been launched since March 2018 to present.
Foster, who is a Director at the Guyana National Newspapers Ltd and Secretary/CEO of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club expressed gratitude to both organisations for sponsoring the Tournament. Special thanks were extended to GNNL Chairperson Geeta Chandan Edmond and acting General Manager Donna Todd. The GNNL/RHTYSC 100 Balls Tournament is one of several that the Berbice Cricket Board and the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association would be hosting in 2019 for teams in the Sub-Association as they strive to fulfill their mandates.
Acting General Manager of GNNL Donna Todd noted that her Company was pleased to be associated with Berbice Cricket and expressed confidence that the Tournament would be a successful one.
