Curtis Dey receives the winning Mayor’s Cup from the Mayor of New Amsterdam Winifred Haywood as the other outstanding riders look on.
Residents of New Amsterdam, Canje, Corentyne and surrounding communities were out in their numbers to the second annual Mayor’s Cycle Road Race which was held on Sunday last around the town of New Amsterdam.
The 10-lap event, which was held in honour of the Mayor of New Amsterdam her Worship Mrs. Winifred Haywood, was organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC). The event was hotly contested throughout and in the end there was an exciting and nailbiting finish between Curtis Dey and Balram Narine with Dey edging out Narine, who was the defending champion, to take top honours in a time of 1hr: 58: 20secs.
Fans on hand said they had not seen such keen competition in a while in the 10 laps round the town. Ralph Seenarine came in third with Mario Washington fourth and Kevin Ross fifth.
The outstanding rides pose with the silverware along with Mayor Winifred Haywood and organiser Randolph Roberts.
Mario Washington was the top juvenile with Jeremiah Joseph and Steve Bhimsingh rounding off the top three. Aaron Rajnarine was the winner in the U14 category. Veteran Sybourne Fernandes, who held his own among the younger riders and led the pack for some time, was the lone Veteran to compete, while Whitney Poyer was the lone female and they both receive special prizes.
The cyclists pedaled off at 13:30hrs from in front of Rainbow Bar and Beer garden on Republic Road proceeded north and turned west into Vryheid Street then South into Main Road, left into Philadelphia Street then another left onto Republic Road. They sequence was repeated 10 times, covering a distance of 40 miles. The under-14 riders covered a distance of 12-miles in 3 laps. A total of 15 cyclists took part in the event.
Prime prizes went to Seenarine who rode away with three; Narine took two, while Curtis Dey got one.
Mayor Haywood expressed her delight at being a part of the event and commended all those who participated and contributed in some way of the other to make it a success.
The race was organized by coach Randolph Roberts. Appreciation was also extended to the various businesses and individuals who supported the event as well as the Divisional Commander of the Police ‘B’ Division, Assistant Commissioner Paul Langevine and ranks. (Samuel Whyte)
