Unprecedented in the history of the institution, the Bartica Regional Hospital is now staffed and equipped to carry out various surgeries (both emergency and elective) and provide other medical services.
Regional Health Officer, Dr. Edward Sagala, reported that the hospital is now staffed with 19 doctors, seven of whom are Medical Specialists. These would include a General Surgeon, Pediatrician, Dermatologist, Gynecologist, Anesthetist, Orthopedist, Obstetrician, along with one Radiographer and eleven General Medical Officers.
Residents of Bartica and nearby communities, and even persons coming out of interior locations, can now access a number of medical services at the hospital.
As a result of a now fully functional Operating Theatre, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and an Adult Intensive Care Unit, the hospital has been able to cut patient referrals to other institutions by more than
half.
A brand new CT scanner will soon be operational at the hospital, and will serve residents in and around Bartica, and even persons from other nearby administrative regions.
Sagala added that a Radiologist and Dental Surgeon will be added to the staff in the near future.
Apart from the Bartica Hospital, the Regional Health Department has also strengthened various locations across the region with doctors, including the Upper Mazaruni– Imbamadai, Jawala, Kako, Kamarang, Waramadong and Paruima; Middle Mazaruni: Issano and Isseneru; and also Kaikan and Iterinbang in the Cuyuni.
By the close of this year, Phillipi, Chinoweing, Puruni Landing and Kurupung will also have the services of resident doctors.
The Bartica Regional Hospital also boasts, for the first time, the appointment of a Medical Superintendent (ag), in Dr. Gillian Jardine, who has already given more than six years’ service to her home town.
Dr. Edward Sagala, the current R.H.O., has served in the field of medicine, in various capacities around the country, for the past 37 years.
