The trafficking of cannabis continues to be a prevalent issue Police ranks on Friday unearthed an excess of 1,000 grams of cannabis in a minibus travelling along the East Coast Demerara Public Road.
According to information received, ranks from the Vigilance Police Station intercepted a minibus and a search was conducted. It was observed that a passenger was acting in a suspicious manner.
A search conducted on the bag, which he was carrying revealed four parcels, well taped together. Further inspection led to the discovery of a quantity of stems, leaves and seeds suspected to be cannabis.
The suspected cannabis was weighed and amounted to 1,945.5 grams. The 24-year-old suspect who hails from New Amsterdam, Berbice was taken into custody and is being processed for court.
Just recently on Monday last, three women were caught with 14.5 pounds which is 167 grams of cannabis. As a result, they squealed on their supplier which led to his arrest.
The man, Timothy La Fleur, 34, of 288 Errol’s Ville, New Amsterdam, Berbice, has since denied that he gave the women the drugs to transport. He has since been charged with two counts of being in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
One of the women was arrested and charged, while the other two were not. Nandi Barker, 36, a market vendor of Lot 70 Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, who was the driver of the vehicle, was charged with being in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
