In yet another drive to fight diabetes in Guyana, the Guyana Diabetes Association have already chartered out a course with the main objective being to unleash a forcible battle against the disease, with the hope of attaining a significant reduction in cases.
This is coming from Guyana’s Glynis Beaton, who happens to hold a prestigious position on the board of the International Diabetes Federation.
To date, Guyana has certainly been chalking up notable points in this respect, as depicted in their June-December 2018 official report which showcases a comprehensive look at the activities executed by the local diabetic arm in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and other stakeholders.
Among the accomplishments of the association is the two-day training in Diabetes prevention held at the Wind Jammer Hotel in Georgetown, for which certificates of participation was issued.
A Continuous Medical Examination (CME) course was held last year at the Pegasus Hotel, which was attended by over 131 medical practitioners, who were able to attain credits at four different levels.
That aside, several outreach sessions were held in the areas of Berbice, and La Parfaite Hamonie, West Bank Demerara, while other ventures included educative and informative health exhibitions in many areas across Guyana.
According to Beaton, the local diabetes association is poised to commence distribution of blood sugar machines to members, even as they make ready for the distribution of over the counter medication (of course with a doctor’s prescription).
The association has reportedly received over US$5000 in influential drugs for this purpose from overseas based diabetic patient Timothy Alonzo who resides in Michigan, USA.
Other forthcoming initiatives include improving insulin supply and its delivery. This will be made possible with assistance from the Insulin for Life, USA Organisation.
This organisation will send the insulin to the Ministry of Public Health, and after it is made available, it will be distributed to pharmacies. This is a venture to be spearheaded by the Guyana Diabetes Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health’s Chronic Disease Department.
Guyana will be also well represented when the local diabetes arm is represented by a young member at the IDF General Meeting in South Korea in December of this year. They will also be well represented at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Session in June 2019 as they attempt to combat and educate on the disease at an international level.
