The Guyana Diabetes Association (GDA), during the week, hosted a successful event themed, “Eating with Music.” Persons living with diabetes were treated to hearty meals filled with low-carb foods.
According to the president of the association, Glynis Beaton, this event among many other activities planned for the year, is in aid of bringing awareness to the nation.
“In bringing more awareness to Guyana so that there can be better management of diabetes, we are providing a whole host of events for this year,” Ms. Beaton stated.
‘Eating with music’ was the first event for the year. It allowed persons to eat and exercise at the same time through dancing. “Although we did not get the music this time around, we are looking to see what effect exercise has on diabetics.” Beaton mentioned.
She added that going forward, they will stick to the theme of the event. “We really want to see the effects of exercising; therefore, the next time around more low-carb foods will be provided and lots of music for dancing.”
At the event, persons were shown how they can count the amount of carbs in their food by a display of the portion of a meal and the aid of spoons to count the quantity of carbohydrates when dishing out a meal.
While persons were treated to their meals, Dr. Yacklin Gonzalez was present to distribute over the counter drugs to them. Painkillers, nasal sprays, medication for allergy, cold and flu were some of the prescriptions handed out.
The success of the event means that Guyana can look forward to more of its kind, Beaton said. “The event was a great success despite the absence of the music, as planned. Therefore, we will be hosting another such event to better test the effects of exercise on diabetes while at the same time meeting and supporting our loved ones dealing with this condition.”
