The three women, who were nabbed in a car at the police check point with a quantity of narcotics about 23:30 hrs on Monday, have revealed to police how they got the drugs.
After interrogation by ranks of B division, the women told investigators that they were given the 14.5 pounds, (6.539 kilograms) of cannabis to transport by a male who lives in New Amsterdam, Berbice. The police subsequently went to the man’s house on March 26 where they arrested the man and seized a quantity of narcotics; 267 grams of cannabis was found at his home.
The man, Timothy La Fleur, 34, of 288 Errol’s Ville, New Amsterdam, Berbice, has since denied that he gave the women the drugs to transport. He has since been charged with two counts of being in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
One of the women was arrested and charged, while the other two were not. Nandi Barker, 36, a market vendor of Lot 70 Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, who was the driver of the silver gray (Runx) motor car No PNN 9408 was charged with being in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
La Fleur and Barker appeared on Friday before Magistrate Peter Hugh in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. They pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and were remanded to jail until April 9.
Meanwhile La Fleur pleaded guilty to the separate charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and was sentenced to two years in jail and fined $240,300.
