Trenace Lowe (left) and Jody-Ann Blake (second left) lost in straight sets to Dominican Republic in the final of the women’s doubles.Guyana’s Joel Alleyne (left) and Nigel Bryan (second left) finished with bronze after losing to Dominican Republic in their men’s double semifinal.
The home supporters that littered the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Homestretch Avenue last evening had much to cheer about as they saw the local contingent capture three medals after a very competitive day of doubles action at the 61st Caribbean Table Tennis Championship (CTTC), which served off on Monday last and will conclude this Sunday at the same venue.
The ladies pair of Jody-Ann Blake and Trenace Lowe breezed into the final after making light work of Jamaica and Barbados in straight sets but they had a taste of their own medicine after falling to the Dominican Republic (DR) duo of Esmerlyn Castro and Brito Eva in a similar emphatic 3-0 fashion.
About five minutes after winning the mixed doubles final with Isaac Vila, Castro had little time to catch her breath but still put in a strong performance to outplay the Guyanese in the women’s doubles final.
The duo of Nigel Bryan and Joel Alleyne defeated Guadeloupe’s pair of Dinga Lionel and Lombardy Christophe 3-1 in the round-of-16 before edging the Cubans; Livan Martinez and Barbaro Oliva, 3-2 in the quarterfinals.
However, once again the Guyanese fell to DR that went on to capture the gold medal, this time in the semifinal of the men’s doubles 3-1. In the mixed doubles, the Golden Arrowhead was represented well by Christopher Franklin and Trenace Lowe who had no trouble in cruising past Martinique (3-0) and Barbados (3-0) in straight sets before losing to eventual winners, Esmerlyn Castro and Isaac Vila of the Dominican Republic.
The tournament continues today with first round matches in the male and female Under-21 division and the Veteran’s division from 09:00hrs. (Calvin Chapman story and photos)
