Three female drug dealers who opted to transport their merchandise in the dead of the night were nabbed by alert police manning the police check point on the eastern half of the Berbice River Bridge.
According to information, about 23:30 hours on Monday, a party of police ranks was on duty at the Police Check Point when the ranks stopped a silver gray (Runx) motor car No PNN 9408. The vehicle had three females inside. It was being driven by Nandi Barker, 36, a market vendor of lot 70 Kaneville, East Bank Demerara.
The other two occupants were Sabrena Gardan, 21, unemployed, of lot 59 Grove, East Bank Demerara, and Tanesha Niranjan, 20, a Market Vendor, of lot 23 Second Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara.
The occupants were told to step out of the vehicle which was searched by the police. During the search the cops unearthed a blue plastic tarpaulin in the trunk. The tarpaulin was opened in the presence of the women and eight compressed transparent plastic parcels were found inside.
These were further opened and found to contain leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis.
The women were told of the offence committed, cautioned, arrested and taken to Central Police Station, along with the suspected narcotics and the motor car.
The contents were subsequently tested and weighed in their presence and found to be 14.5 Pounds, (6,539 grams) of cannabis.
The three suspects are in custody and are expected to be charged shortly.
