More than two weeks after he allegedly attempted to steal a car belonging to his fellow villager, 39-year-old Bisram Paul was yesterday released on $40,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
An unrepresented Paul, of Lot 399 Third Street, Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on March 11, at Herstelling, he attempted to steal motorcar PSS 2909 valued at $2M, from a female resident of the same community.
Kaieteur News understands that around 01:00hrs on the day in question, the woman was asleep when she was awoken by her car alarm going off. As a result, she looked through a window but saw no one. Soon after the woman went back to bed, she heard what sounded like shattered glass, followed by the alarm going off again.
Reports indicate that she ran to her window from where she saw a black Toyota Raum speeding away. The woman stayed at the window and noticed the same car turning around. The car then drove up to the woman’s vehicle and a man exited.
It is alleged that he pushed his hands inside the vehicle and the alarm went off again and he yanked at the alarm wire and pulled it out. The woman began yelling thief, and warned him that he was being recorded on CCTV cameras and that the police would find him.
During his address to the court, Paul claimed that the charge against him “is a total set up.” “How can someone try to steal a car with a big brick?” he asked. In his petition for bail, he told the Magistrate that he is the sole breadwinner for his family.
The defendant further explained that he has an unblemished criminal record and is willing to comply with any conditions attached to bail. After listening to him, Magistrate Scarce set bail at $40,000 and order him to report to the Providence Police Station every Saturday until the hearing and determination of the matter.
The Magistrate also instructed him not to make direct or indirect contact with the woman.
On the other hand, Paul pleaded for the return of his motorcar, which he said was impounded by police at the time of his arrest. He claimed that he works taxi and the car is his only source of income. Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, however, indicated that the alleged victim identified the licence plate of the car believed to be the one speeding away from the scene.
The woman informed the court that while she was at the station giving a statement, Paul threatened to kill her and her family. The Magistrate, however, directed her to make a report to the police in that regard.
