President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle may have just earned himself the title of one of the most powerful men in amateur boxing in the Americas. The GBA boss was on Friday elected Vice President of the American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) at a Congress held in Panama City, Panama.
Ninvalle’s most recent elevation adds to two other important appointments he received this year.
“It’s a plus for us (CARICOM) as before we never had a representative from the Caribbean elected to such a high office in the Confederation. My intention is to use this as a vehicle to further the development of the sport right across the Americas,” Ninvalle commented on his appointment.
AMBC is an organization with 43 countries affiliated and governs boxing in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. It is one of five confederations that falls under the umbrella of the 203-nation AIBA.
Ninvalle’s most recent elevation highlights his work and work ethic, increasing his appointments to other posts over the last three months. In January he was elected as Chairman of the Caribbean Steering Committee which oversees the sport in Caricom, while one month later AIBA appointed him Chairman of its Youth Commission.
The AMBC elections are held every four years.
The Panama Congress also saw two other Caribbean administrators being elected to the Executive Committee of the AMBC. Leyla Jackson of the Cayman Islands and Dr. Debra Stephen-John from Grenada were elected in first and second place to the eight-man Executive Committee.
This is a plus for the Caribbean and the confidence they have put in Ninvalle and the other executives appointed, as they decided on a unified approach to their representation on the international and regional bodies as they push for better offerings from the parent body toward the developmental thrust of the Caribbean associations.
Ninvalle has been pushing for improvement in Guyana and has increased the number of events for local boxers, successfully involving our Caribbean counterparts. Currently a team of boxers are preparing for several overseas engagements, starting with the Pan Am qualifiers from April 2 to 11 in Nicaragua, but as usually the problem is funding. The GBA is currently waiting on the Director of Sport and the National Sports Commission to approve the required funds to green light the teams’ travel to their first regional engagement of a series. Corporate Guyana have been very supportive and a thankful Ninvalle and local team will continue to also depend on their input to ensure the team travels and bring Guyana continued glory on the international boxing scene.
