Seasoned cyclist Rastaf O’Selmo and Christopher Cornelius broke away early to start the 2ndLondon and Lambert Classic Road Race on Phagwah Day and were never caught as they took the top two sports, while other winners on Thursday were Jaheme Henry among the juveniles, the veteran Andrew Spencer won in his class and for the females Clicelia Spencer was the winner.
The first place winner O’Selmo copped two sprint prizes with second placed Christopher Cornelius getting the other two and Marcus Keiler was third in the senior category.
Andrew Spencer rode off with the veteran’s race and in the course of that win captured all five sprint prizes with the second position taken by one of the sponsors Nigel Londo
n and third was John Charles.
Jaheme Henry won the race among the juveniles, which started at Fairs’ Rust to the GuyOil Gas Station in Amelia’s Ward and back, from second placed Mark Lewis (Jr.) as Esau Lowden was third. Clicelia Spencer took the female race winning from second placed Abigail Jeffrey as Shakina London came in third.
Apostles Nigel London and Leon Lambert, who have an interest in promoting local cycling, were the main sponsors of the event, while Gideon Construction, R and N Electrical and Consulting Company have joined as sponsors and others both local and overseas.
A new racing cycle was presented to young female cyclist Ms. Clicelia Spencer in keeping with the sponsors’ goal.
O’Selmo, the winner of the senior category was awarded the $10,000 David’s Voice Award, which was given in recognition of an autistic boy whose parent has seen the work done by London Lambert Classic founders; and has pledged to support.
The ‘LonLam’ Classic body, will, through the parent of the autistic child launch a scholarship fund at the beginning of the new school year starting with $50,000. This annual donation is to assist a student who has defied the odds to pursue their education.
The event organised by the Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club began from Richmond Hill in Mackenzie to Silver Hill and back to across Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge and into Winifred Gaskin Road to finish in One Mile Wismar at the hill junction in the vicinity of Wisrock.
It was also announced that on April 7, the Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club will stage the annual Bakers Memorial 60-Mile cycle race which will began at the Falls Gas Station on the East Bank Demerara and will end outside the Telecoms junction in Linden.
