Mar 20, 2019 Letters
After reading Freddie’s article posted in yesterday’s KN (19th March 2019), I became compelled to write this letter. We, the Guyanese at home, really need to step up our game and stop living in denial. It’s time to stop the backwardness. After all, we are now in the 21st century.
While, I can forgive them for having the CCTV based at their HQ, I cannot believe that after all these years the Hand in Hand is still using a GCIS letterhead. It’s either the people working there lack vision or are wearing dark sunglasses at their desks.
Anyhow, the real purpose of this mail is to highlight another form of backwardness observed at our Law Courts. It’s disgusting, and very embarrassing to see Police Officers shoulder-lifting injured suspects into court rooms.
Based on my observations, this has been happening for years, at least more than nine years. I am sure there are sufficient funds in the coffers at the relevant authorities to purchase two wheelchairs for the Courts. I will place the blame on those persons who operate on the ground on a daily basis. Their mindset is “business as usual” as is the case for most employees in Guyana. As such, they (e.g. Police Officers) see no need to budget, request and insist for wheelchairs to be at the Courts.
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all Guyanese (especially Heads of Departments) to start thinking outside of the box, to have vision and purpose, to be innovative and to openly (meaning civilly aggressive) make demands for the modernization of systems at the workplace.
To those who remained here to serve this country, I would like to ask you to “tun-up” your work ethics and approach for a modern Guyana. For example, tell your bosses that you are not coming to work if your Department continues to use pen and paper for data inputting and management. Tell the Commissioner of Police that it’s inhumane to carry injured suspects and convicts on your shoulders. It is time!
