Andre Padlock Green was in sublime form as he once again put a lock on the field to take top honours when the Courts Furniture Store Berbice Branch held their annual cycle road in Berbice yesterday. The race was organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) and coordinated by Randolph Roberts and Joseph Britton.
Green was in ripping form as he opened a wide gap on the second place finisher in whipping the field as he rode all alone for a major part of the downward journey to win the 50 miles race in a time of 2hrs: 6 minutes. 59.02 seconds (2:06.59.02).
Riding in a distant second was Ajai Gopilall with Paul De Nobrega winning the sprint home from Balram Narine, Christopher Griffith and Brighton John to round out the top six positions.
The race began around 13:30hrs with the 30 cyclists being sent on their way from in front of the Courts New Amsterdam Branch Store at Main and St Ann’s Street then proceeded to Nand Persaud Company Number 36, before turning back to finish at its place of origin.
As the race began, a bunch the included Andrew Hicks, Michael Anthony, Akeem Wilkinson, Adrian Griffith, Narine, Walter Grant Stuart, Gopilall, De Nobrega and Paul Choo Wee Nam led the break away and it was a ding done tussle after.
There were a number of mini breaks, for the advantage but the leaders were quickly roped in.
Meanwhile, Green was leading the chasing pack and he connected with the leaders just about the turn back stage. The two Berbician Green and Hicks, who are familiar with the route immediately went on a break on the turn back and began opening a gap. The pack, meanwhile, was working hard to catch up. They were able to connect with Hicks, but try as they may were not able to connect with Green who continued to power away for the easy win in the end.
In the veteran category, Junior Niles won from Paul Choo-Wee-Nam with Leer Nunes third.
The Juvenile category saw Mario Washington winning from Jeremiah Joseph and Sherwin Sampson. Among the females riders Shenika Tiexeira rode home ahead of Maria Carrington.
Among riders from the FACC Balram Narine and Ralph Seenarine were the top two finishers.
The sprint point prizes went to Green with three while one each went to De Nobrega, Anthony, Niles, Gopilall and Hicks.
Speaking at the simple presentation ceremony Berbice Branch Manager, Stanley McKenzie had words of thanks for the cyclists’, especially the winners, all the spectators and every one that participated and helped to make the activity a success.
He also thanked the FACC and Coordinator and Coach Randolph Roberts for his efforts to make that even a success. (Samuel Whyte)
