On Tuesday, 5th March, 2019, Kaieteur News had an article titled ‘Passengers, travel agents impatient over Fly Jamaica refunds,’ That article revealed that the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) had called in the company officials on the refunds issue.
It was reported by Captain Ronald Reece, a principal of this company, that ‘Fly Jamaica is working to issue a statement,’ and is appealing for patience by those seeking refunds.
Having said that, it appears to me that Fly Jamaica is not addressing the pertinent issue, which is the delay in paying refunds. As a practising accountant, my question to Fly Jamaica is – why it has to take over three months to determine the payment of refunds? Such a decision can be determined in a matter of days!
Mr. Editor, there was no mention that Fly Jamaica is experiencing a CASH FLOW PROBLEM. It is evident, that after 3 months and no payments are yet made to passengers, that there appears to be a cash flow deficiency. Instead of indulging in a ‘talk shop’ approach, Fly Jamaica needs to inform its passengers about its ability to pay. Further, the GCAA should be examining their recent Financial Statements to determine the extent of this financial problem and the way out.
Captain Reece says that he is ‘working to issue a statement.’ I close by saying that such a statement is long overdue and yours truly is awaiting it, and one will expect a positive approach to this unacceptable situation. Also, GCCA needs, among others, to address the real problem(s).
Sincerely
John Seeram
