A man who described himself as a family friend, Catcha Latchman, 42, a labourer of Belvedere, Corentyne, Berbice is accused of sexually assaulting a six-year-old child after visiting her home. The incident was committed on 26th December, 2018.
The man appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh in the Albion Magistrate’s Court where he was found guilty of the crime and jailed for three years.
It was reported that the man is well known to the family and would visit regularly. On the day in question, he went to the home and walked through the open gate. The child was sitting outside on a small bench doing her homework.
Latchman came and sat next to her and subsequently fondled her vagina. The child went inside and told her mother that she did not want to go back outside because of what Latchman did to her. When the mother came outside, the man ran away.
The matter was reported and Latchman subsequently turned himself over in company with his lawyer after he learned that the child’s father was looking for him.
The case was prosecuted by woman Inspector Althea Solomon.
