Ranks attached to the Whim Police Station in Corentyne, Berbice, were yesterday placed in a predicament, after a remand prisoner waiting in the lock-ups to be transported to the New Amsterdam Prison escaped. The hunt is on for the escapee who is said to be from Friendship Village, Corentyne.
According to a police source, the fugitive, Dinesh Sookram, had just been charged at the Whim Magistrate’s Court for a break and enter and larceny offence, was placed on $200,000 bail, but could not afford to post same. He was subsequently escorted to the Whim lock-ups in the compound of the court to be transported to the prison, but Sookram had other plans.
Outsmarting the ranks attached to the station, Sookram reportedly waited until the coast was clear and removed a board from the top of the wall at the back of the lock-ups.
With his petite frame, the police source said, it would have been quite easy for Sookram to slither through the opening he created for himself. It is unclear how he managed to walk out of the compound without ranks noticing, since it is normal for Community Police and other junior ranks to be walking around on a regular basis.
The Commander, who was informed of the incident shortly after it occurred, visited the station and spoke with his ranks. The station Sergeant along with other police men and women were given instructions to provide statements detailing the events prior and leading up to the time of the escape.
Just last week, a prisoner also escaped from the Blairmont lock-ups but was recaptured shortly after.
