Troy Peters, one of the individuals charged for assaulting a police constable following a video that went viral on social media, yesterday returned to court and answered another charge, this time of resisting arrest.
Peters, 26, and bus driver Carlos Bacchus, 29, first appeared on February 18, 2019 before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where they denied the charges that included assault, obstructing traffic and resisting arrest.
The new charge for Peters alleged that on February 13, 2019 at Robb and Camp Street the accused obstructed a police constable who was acting in the execution of his duties.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read out to him by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
Police prosecutor Adduni Innis had no objections to bail being granted to the accused. Therefore, Magistrate Marcus released Peters on self-bail and instructed that he returns to court on April 1, 2019.
The facts of the charge indicated that on the day in question the police officer who was fully dressed in his uniform, was executing his duties in the area when he observed a minibus bearing registration numbers PTT 9295 loading passengers on the southern side of the street. This vehicle was allegedly obstructing traffic.
As a result, the officer went over and told the two accused of the offence. The duo reportedly became annoyed and began behaving disorderly. They were warned. Then they allegedly began assaulting the traffic cop, who attempted to arrest them both.
