Belize (Reporter.bz) – On Tuesday, March 12, five men accused of a gruesome murder which shocked and outraged the nation will appear in Court in Belmopan before Justice Antonette Moore to face justice.
In July 2016, William ‘Danny’ Mason, and four men said to be in his employ – Terence Fernandez, Ashton Vanegas, Keiron Fernandez and Ernest Castillo – were arrested and charged for the murder of Belmopan pastor Llewellyn Lucas.
When Police searched a vehicle belonging to Mason, in which he and the other men had arrived at a bar in Belmopan, they found Lucas’s head in a plastic bag in a bucket. It was believed that Lucas had been kidnapped and killed earlier that day at a ranch on the Phillip Goldson Highway belonging to Mason. Police never found the rest of Lucas’ body but believe it was burnt on the ranch.
The arrest of Mason made headlines for a long time, not only because of the sensational nature of the murder, but because he was a personal friend and business partner of Minister of National Security, John Saldivar, and many other Cabinet Ministers.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Mason, originally from Guyana, was known as a con-man and extortionist. His wife, believed to have been involved in the kidnapping and murder, was detained for a time but released without charges.
