The community of Samatta Point, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, on Friday received a significant monetary donation towards the development of a playfield and recreational centre for the area.
The Government of Guyana with assistance from a private donor, reached out to the members of the community to make the generous handover.
Minister of Citizenship, Winston Felix, visited Samatta Point to release the cheque for $1.5M to the residents. These funds will be used to commence works on a plot of land that will be used for sporting and recreational activities.
According to Mr. Eric Francois who received the cheque on behalf of the community, the financial assistance was greatly needed and the residents are very pleased for the help.
He indicated that works on the plot of land will be done in two phases. “The first phase will be the development of the land so that sports and recreational activities can be held.”
Mr. Francois added, “In the next phase we will be adding lights, sanitary facilities and pavilions. Following those phases we will be doing Information and Communications Technology (ICT) hubs and much more as the funds come.”
He also mentioned that a committee was launched to manage the playground and funds going towards its development.
