We believe that balance drives a better world for all. Therefore collective action is key for promoting an environment where the rights of women are recognized as human rights and gender equality is upheld.
The Women and Gender Equality Commission (W&GEC) support grassroots activism to global action. We embrace this exciting period of history where combined action and shared responsibility for driving a gender-balanced world is key.
We are cognizant that Gender equality by 2030 requires urgent action to eliminate the many root causes of discrimination that still curtail women’s rights in private and public spheres. For example, discriminatory laws need to change and legislation adopted to proactively advance equality.
As a result, the W&GEC initiated a research titled “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”; which examined international, regional and local laws and made twenty eight recommendations for women’s rights and equality. The Report was handed over to the Speaker of the National Assembly on Tuesday last.
Given that Gender Based Violence is one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world today. We believe that eliminating gender-based violence is a priority, therefore we have embarked on hosting workshops and public awareness sessions in all 10 Administrative Regions of Guyana.
We also recommended that there should be ongoing specialized training on the Sexual Offences Act and the Domestic Violence Act for judges, magistrates and police officers and others involved in the criminal justice system. There should also be effective legal aid services throughout Guyana with priority being given to matters that affect women such as Gender Based Violence and other forms of discrimination. Guyana should introduce and enforce legislation to identify and punish those who engage in sexual harassment.
The W&GEC continues to promote women’s needs and interests and concerns in the wider spectrum of economic and social development and address the practical and strategic needs of women as being different from those of men.
Michelle Obama said “No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens”.
Balance drives a better working world. Let’s all help create a #BalanceforBetter world.
