A labourer was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday, after he was found guilty of the murder of his wife at Charity, Essequibo Coast, in 2015.
The summary read that between the 16th and 17th March 2015, the accused, Anthony Joseph, killed his common law wife, Quineza Patricia Benn.
During the trial, the court heard that Joseph and Benn were in the habit of consuming alcohol. On several occasions, Benn had made reports to the police that Joseph would beat her, threaten to kill her and accuse her of being unfaithful.
On the March 16, 2015, however, around 16:00 hrs, Joseph and Benn were seen together imbibing alcohol at a liquor restaurant. They subsequently had an argument. They then moved to another rum shop where they continued imbibing.
The following day around 07:00 hrs, Benn was found dead on the roadside, with injuries to her face, chest and head. According to the deceased woman’s grandmother, in her deposition, on the 17th March 2015, she went down to Forbsie Street where she saw the body of the deceased bearing marks of violence.
The court provided enough evidence to convince the jury of Joseph’s guilt. After a verdict of guilty was returned, the presiding judge, Brassington Reynolds sentenced Joseph to life imprisonment. He will be eligible for parole after 25 years.
