A 24-year-old man yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, after he was arrested on ‘Mash’ morning, for allegedly committing a robbery under arms, following ‘jouvert’ celebrations.
The accused, Junior Murray, denied the allegation which stated that on February 23, last, at Anira Street, Queenstown, Georgetown, while being in company of others, and armed with a gun, he robbed Simone Persaud of $20,000 cash.
Murray, who was not represented by an attorney, informed the court that he hails from ‘J’ 946 Johnson Street, Georgetown. He went on to say that he is a mason by profession and a father of two.
He begged to be released on bail asking for any conditions to be attached because he is the sole breadwinner of his home. “Mom’s, I begging you for anything to release me…I can even call my boss so I can pay back the woman and finish the matter.”
Moreover, the victim’s name was called twice but, no answer or appearance was made. Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield highlighted that she was informed of the court hearing; however, he was uncertain as to why she was not present.
Murray then pleaded with the magistrate to be able to say a few more words, and his request was granted. He mentioned that, “I went out and party by myself on Saturday night, so I don’t know how they saying I was in company of others. I was intoxicated and I had over $20,000 in my pocket when I was arrested, now I don’t know where it is. This morning I know I was charged for robbery under arms after being arrested since Saturday.”
Prosecutor Mansfield objected to bail, based on the serious nature of the allegation, and the fact that a gun was allegedly used. He also indicated that the items were not recovered.
The prosecutor related that on the day in question, after the alleged incident, the defendant was apprehended by the son of the victim as the others made good their escape.
The victim and family members then kept Murray under arrest until he was handed over to the police. Prosecutor Mansfield also indicated that nothing was found in the possession of the defendant when he was handed over to the police.
Bail was granted in the sum of $100,000 under the condition that the accused report to the Alberttown Police Station every Friday, and he is to lodge his passport, pending the outcome of the trial.
The matter was adjourned until March 4. Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan also warned Murray that if he does not show up at the next court date, whatever decision is made in his absence, he will have to abide by it when he is arrested.
