Florida-bred, ‘Don’t Over Look’, in its first race in Guyana after being imported just three weeks ago, ran a magnificently race to claim top honours in the C Class and Lower feature sprint which was over a distance of 1400m, last Sunday at the Rising Sun Turf Club in Berbice, during the first leg of the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee’s Triple Crown.
Don’t Over Look stormed out of the sixth post and bided its time, while betting favorites, Storm Bird and Just Call Me Boss set a blistering pace on the well prepared track.
The move from ‘Don’t Over Look’, which fetched a top weight of 126 pounds, came in a flash.
Storm Bird had the lead, Just Call Me Boss, Lucky Star, Settling Star and others were lurking as champion jockey Ron Ali of Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) was waiting for the right moment to make his move.
Around the second turn, Ali brought ‘Don’t Over Look’ to the outside of the pacesetters and with two furlongs remaining, a powerful surge from the eventual winner produce a stunning sprint speed to overtake the leaders for a win in 1 minute 28seconds, securing the $1million top cash prize.
Storm Bird faded for a third place finish, while Lucky Star finished second and Settling Star was fourth.
The commanding win for ‘Don’t Over Look’ had its handlers of the Jumbo Jet Racing Stables thinking about bigger things for the newly imported thoroughbred. “I feel overjoyed,” said Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr., “I am happy since this is the first big race I have won as a trainer, I look forward to much more.”
