Mr. Editor,
The Irfaan Ali ‘degree gate’ scandal continues to anger Guyanese throughout the nation, especially the independent thinking PPP supporters. There are many more of us than Bharrat Jagdeo and Irfaan Ali would have liked.
The now degree gate is only getting wider. With the article by Kaieteur News on February 22nd that shows clearly Ali refuses to answers the basic questions. The gate now opens at a 90-degree angle.
Like any sane Guyanese, I have the following questions for Irfaan Ali and Mr. Jagdeo, who engineered his selection:
1. Which University did he apply to for the transcript?
2. Where is the University located?
3. Who is the contact person at the University?
4. Which University is the Parent University of the local branch?
5. When is he likely to get the transcript?
6. Is this the same West Demerara Chamber of Commerce that no one has heard of?
7. Why doesn’t the Ministry of Finance and the Graduate school have any record of his undergraduate qualifications?
8. If his qualifications are legitimate, why is he dodging questions?
9. Who are his classmates? Can he identify other graduates?
10. Who were his lecturers?
11. Mr. Ali promised to release his qualifications after the presentation to the PPPC, which was more than a month ago.
12. Certificates of Completion are an attendance record; they are never considered qualification, profession or academic. Does Mr. Ali think we are that stupid?
13. Is Mr. Ali guilty of academic fraud?
Mr. Editor, I call on the following institutions to investigate this scandal. This is a matter of national importance. In the nigh improbable event Irfaan Ali is elected President, this will be a global embarrassment.
1. The Guyana Police Service – this is a case of academic and general fraud, a criminal offense.
2. The Guyana Accreditation Committee – should pronounce of whether or not the fabricated school ever attained accreditation.
3. The Indian Government – a crime was committed against the Indian people and should be rectified.
4. The Indian High Commission to Guyana – they were the direct fraud victims. They should release all files relevant to the application.
5. Guyana’s Integrity Commission – their focus should not only be on material wealth but as their name suggests, integrity as well.
6. The PSM – they ought to disclose all application details, were they complicit in the fraud?
By now, this should have been aptly labeled ‘degree gate’ as an appropriate name for the scandal given its magnitude.
