Minister of State, Joseph Harmon has handed out letters of land allocation to families in Coomacka Mines, a community in Upper Demerara-Berbice (Region 10).
Coomacka is a small community, one of several in the area that started with bauxite mining operations. Over 200 people will benefit from this allocation of the land that they are already residing on. Some of those residents have been doing so for six decades. This allows for titles to be issued as soon as the government wraps up its surveys in the area. Those surveys are to be completed by the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL), in a few weeks.
The Coomacka community, about 15 miles away from the business centre of Linden, is still in need of development, to be able to stand on its own. The community currently has its own primary and nursery school, a community health post, a variety store, small shops and other services, but is still dependent on the general services of Linden.
This is the first time the residents will have legal documentation for the land that they are occupying.
Minister Harmon told the residents that the government plans to continue its efforts to ensure that sustainable family-oriented communities are created across the country. He has asked NICIL to complete the requisite surveys in six weeks. He said, “What we are doing here today is to help you improve your quality of life because if you want to go to the bank to do your house or do something to improve your life, you will now have a piece of paper that can show ownership. It is about giving power to you so that you can make decisions for you, your family and your community”.
The residents thanked President Granger and his government for working on their behalf. This included a health worker, Bernadette Torres, who said she has waited 15 years for ownership of the land that she intends to pass down to her children and grandchildren. Another resident, Jean Wagner, said she has been occupying the land for 60 years but was never given the opportunity to own it.
Minister Harmon also provided street lamps to the communities of Mackenzie and Speightland. These will be installed by the Regional Administration. He also promised the teachers of Mackenzie High School that they will be given a much-needed fridge and gas stove.
