West Indies Cricket fans in the Caribbean and the world over are wondering if the Caribbean team will bounce back and perform creditably in the upcoming World Cup which bowls off on May 30 and ends on July 14 in the final at Lords in London. The Caribbean side under Clive Lloyd won the first two tournaments in 1975 and 1979 and was edged out in the 1983 final. Over the years the Windies team has been slipping in its ranking and today it is way down, rated No. 9 in 16 countries in one day cricket (50 over tournament) However there is a glimmer of hope with the team’s performance in the second 50 over match against England at the Kensington Oval when it won by 26 runs with eight balls to spare in a high scoring match. West Indies also defeated England in the test series 2-1.
Despite the disappointing performance of the Caribbean side over the past three to four decades, most of the fans continue to support them (of course many of them have since passed) but the young generation is patriotic and is all behind their team although there are disappointments here and there with team selection and other issues. They are hoping that their current stars will reach to the calibre of Lloyd, Vivian Richards, Alvin Kalicharran, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Colin Croft, Gordon Greenidge, Malcolm Marshall, Deryk Murray, Desmond Haynes, and others. The big problem with the current crop of cricketers is consistency. They fail to hold their own and as a result the selectors are forced to switch them around and at instances some of them lack the confidence. The current captain Jason Holder seems to be doing a good job, young Shimron Hetmeyer is consistent with the bat, left arm seamer Sheldon Cottray and spinner Devindra Bissoo are also reliable. Chris Gayle is back and he has shown consistency and with Shai Hope and Darren Bravo the batting side should do well. It is not certain about all rounders Marlon Samuels and Andre Russel. Sunil Narine is not taking part in the qualifiers since he is working on remodeling his bowling action.
West Indies will play its first match in the 2019 World Cup against Pakistan at Trent Bridge on May 31. If they win that match it will give them a boost for the next game on June 10 against South Africa. Only 10 teams are taking part in this year’s tournament: England, South Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Banglaadesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and West Indies. The defending champion is Australia.
