The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) has collaborated with Alford McDonald to stage the Second Annual Patrick Ford Memorial Boxing Tournament tonight at the National Gymnasium in what is anticipated be an exciting night of fistic fury from 19:00hrs.
President of Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle informed that the tournament kick starts the GBA’s International Events for 2019 and will have 15 bouts.
Tonight’s Card should have seen St Lucia’s Middleweight Champion Arthur Langalier fighting Caribbean Middleweight Champion, Guyana’s Desmond Amsterdam.
Ninvalle, however, informed that the St Lucian got cut over his left eye in training and was informed by the doctor that he will need to rest so unfortunately he will not be able to come to Guyana.
“Trinidad and Tobago’s Middleweight Champion Aaron Prince, who fought in last year’s CBC, has replaced Langalier and will now oppose Amsterdam,” informed Ninvalle.
Guyana’s 19-year-old 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games Silver Medallist and Caribbean Bantamweight Champion Keevin Allicock, will face-off with Trinidad & Tobago’s Justin Parris in the main supporting bout in what is anticipated to be a sizzling hot 56 kgs Elite affair.
Last year’s tournament included three Countries; Guyana, Suriname and St Lucia with the host Nation emerging as Champions.
This year’s the tournament was set to include four teams but St Lucia was forced to pull out.
“Each year we want to make this tournament bigger and we hope to have it for decades. But as it gets bigger so too will be cost of staging it and we thank the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Tower Suits for their sponsorship support,” said the GBA Head.
Ninvalle informed that T&T’steam of five boxers and their support staff should have arrived in Guyana last night, while the Suriname’s four boxers have been in Guyana yesterday afternoon since they travelled overland from Guyana’s Dutch neighbour to the East.
All the teams will be here in time for the Weigh-in which takes place this morning at 07:00hrs at the National Gymnasium.
Co-Promoter McDonald, a former Boxer, wants this to be an annual tournament and called for support from the public to come out in their numbers.
“I was trying to get Mexico and Puerto Rico to come for this year but because of the Government ‘shut down’ Puerto Rico could not come. We want to make the standard higher so as to get our boxers ready to not only Bronze Medals but also silver and gold,” McDonald said.
Boxer Mike Parris is Guyana’s lone Olympic Medallist having won Bronze in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.
McDonald says that from next year the tournament will be held on a Saturday, leaving Sunday free for all of the Boxers to spend the day at the Splashmin’s Resort on the Linden Highway.
Ninvalle wants to continue Guyana’s dominance at Regional level and the focus is on the under-16s.
“We had 12 Under-16 Cards for last year and for 2019 our first Card was an Under-16 Card last month,” said Ninvalle, who added that with the quality of boxers on show tonight he would beg anyone to come.
“If you don’t come to the Gymnasium tonight to be a part of top class Regional Amateur Boxing then it’s your loss,” Ninvalle concluded.
Forde, who died at age 55 in Brooklyn, New York in 2011, fought Salvador Sanchez for the WBC featherweight championship of the world in 1980 and was the first Guyanese to fight for a world title before he fought his last professional bout in 1987.
Video clips of Forde’s fights will be shown on a big screen tonight and Admission to stands is $1,000, while entry to Ringside seats cost $2,000.
