Goals either side of play in the sixth and final match of the day backed up by brilliant goalkeeping from FC Eagles’ Nickel White, propelled the West Demerara Football Association team to victory and championship honours in the Finals of the inaugural GFF/Pele Alumni/Frank Watson Memorial National Under-15 Inter Association Tournament.
Playing at the GFF Training Facility in brilliant sunshine on a breezy day, it was a day that the West Demerara champions sailed to three wins to keep an unblemished record as they created history in the process of lifting the championship.
The FC Eagles players and Coaches are joined by Pele Alumni John Yates (2nd right), GFF TD Ian Greenwood (right), Golden Jaguars Head Coach Michael Johnson (2nd left) and GFF Competitions Director, Rev. Ian Alves in celebration following the presentation.
The win over Santos Football Club, the Georgetown Football Association Intra Association winners was well put together by the young Eagles; respective free kicks from Jomaley Kellman in the 18th minute and Captain Romel Medas in the 33rd minute erased all hopes Santos had conjured up of lifting the championship.
Eagles dominated their rivals who were frustrated by the level of resistance the champions put up which was further strengthened or complemented with the excellence and good judgment of White between the uprights.
Eagles had earlier in the day put away Tabatinga FC of the Rupununi Football Association, 3-0 thanks to goals from Kellman (7th, 12th) and Francis Persaud in the 16th minute. Their second match against Bartica’s Rising Stars ended 2-0 in the Eagles favour, compliments of a Telbert Baptiste second half double.
Santos, who were riding high from their winning of Cluster 1 which had featured BV Triumph United and Corriverton Lynx and their two wins yesterday against Tabatinga and Rising Stars, could not muster the energy to make it past the final hurdle.
They were pushed to the hilt by Rising Stars and came back late to tie the game at 1-1 before going on to win via kicks from the penalty mark. Clevon Murray had handed Rising Stars the lead on 15 minutes but Santos responded in the 27th minute through Carlos Agard. Santos went on to win the match 4-2 from the spot.
In their clash with Tabatinga, Santos had won handsomely, 4-1, led by goals from Rahlil Gittens in the 1st minute, Darren Niles (23rd), Kevin Mullin (31st) and Miguel Stoll in the 34th minute. Tabatinga netted their consolation goal in the 39th minute off the boot of Travis Grimmond.
The other match of the day saw Rising Stars romping to victory over Tabatinga via kicks from the penalty mark 4-3 after the two sides had played out a 0-0 stalemate in regulation time. All matches yesterday were played for 40 minutes, two equal halves of 20 minutes with a 10 minute half time rest period.
The champions were rewarded with replica trophies and the championship trophy which was presented by Pele Alumni Representative and former Pele Football Club President, John Yates. Medals were presented to Santos FC.
Golden Jaguars Head Coach Michael Johnson and GFF Technical Director, Ian Greenwood also assisted with the presentation of medals and trophies.
