An investigation has been launched by the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, Brig. George Lewis, into the death of Quavo Daniel, the baby who died after
being burnt by a defective lamp at the hospital.
The baby, at the time he was burnt, was in an incubator at the hospital after being born premature, at the eighth month of the mother’s pregnancy. The baby’s grandmother, Sharon Harding, told this publication that she spoke to the CEO, who told her that he was not informed about the incident and that he launched an investigation as soon as he found out.
The baby was set to undergo a post mortem examination since Monday last, but the hospital staff told them it would have to be postponed to Wednesday because the mortuary did not have the baby’s chart.
The mortuary staff then sent the baby’s mother, Odessa Forde, to uplift the chart, even though only the mortician could uplift it. When Harding and Forde showed up on Wednesday, they were told that the examination must be further postponed to yesterday because they were not punctual.
Harding said that after she inquired today, she was told that the PME was postponed because the hospital needed to send samples from the baby’s body overseas, for certain examinations to be done.
Further, Forde said that early yesterday morning, a hospital staff attempted to reprimand her, saying that if she knew her son was burnt by a lamp, she should have gone to the police.
Harding said that the PME was conducted yesterday and though the CEO committed to giving her an update on the investigation, he has not done so.
The hospital only gave her a ‘slip’ certifying that the exam was conducted, so that the family could conduct a funeral.
The family is contemplating legal action against the hospital.
