Nineteen-year-old Erwin Smith, who is accused of attempting to kill a bus driver during an argument over $100, was yesterday committed to stand trial at the High Court in Georgetown.
On his initial arraignment, Smith was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on July 30, 2018, at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, with intent to commit murder, he caused grievous bodily harm to James Abrams.
At the conclusion of the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) which was conducted by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly, the Magistrate ruled that sufficient evidence was presented against Smith by Police Prosecutor Richard Harris.
Smith will face a judge and jury at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
The Magistrate, however, granted him $200,000 bail pending the hearing and determination of the trial. As a condition of bail, he was instructed to report every Monday to the Brickdam Police Station.
It was reported that on the day in question, Smith had no money and requested for the bus driver to take him home for free.
However, when the man refused, Smith begged him for $100 to pay the fare, but the bus driver refused to give him the money. An argument later ensued between the two, during which Smith pulled out a pair of scissors and stabbed Abrams to the neck.
Abrams, who fell to the ground, was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was treated.
