The maternity and children wards are fully operational at the Wismar Hospital, with the facility being well on its way to better serve the people of Linden and even the wider Region 10. Currently, ongoing works at the facility are focused on the male ward, and Region 10 Regional Chairman, Renis Morian, has said that a mini dispensary is currently in the making as well to serve persons during the weekends.
Morian mentioned the works underway at the facility during a recent Council meeting at which he was high in praise, stating that the delivery of healthcare services offered at the hospital is poised to be improved. The Regional Chairman recalled that during a recent visit, he was accompanied by the Regional Executive Officer [REO], Mr. Orrin Gordon, where they observed the work being done.
“However, the challenge that we have is the same we felt when we had Mr. Gordon Gumbs as the CEO [Chief Executive Officer] of the hospital. Every time we improve things at the hospital, they move it and carry it somewhere else, and this is the same challenge,” Morian opined.
He continued, “Now we have a matter that we have to bring to the Minister, but I have brought it to the Council, so that the Council can voice its disapproval. Now I think we have three doctors working there and now somebody from Georgetown wants to move them from here and take them to Georgetown. We are now bringing up our services to par; it hasn’t met what it was before, but we are now trying.”
“I will get on to the Minister of [Public] Health today, because this is bad for us. We just spoke about the canopy to get patients for us, because Dr. Steve Mark has truly been working to get patients for us. The RDC has been spending a lot of money there, and every time we put things [in place], somebody moves it, everything you put they move it and carry it somewhere else,” said the Regional Chairman.
He expressed his frustration over the situation, disclosing that there are now attempts to move the only x-ray technician at the hospital.
“What is happening to us? That is the lone x-ray technician…what is really happening to us? But we are objecting to it; we will object to it,” Morian insisted. He went on to point out too that a letter was recently received by Dr. [Steve] Mark about the new changes. However, the Regional Chairman expressed anger over a subsequent letter, which he said, was sent by a senior official of the Ministry of Public Health, informing about plans for the doctor to be moved to Lethem.
