After successive , decades-long, winner-takes-all regimes headed by the PNC , PPP/C and PNCR, it is now the right time for political parties to work together and have an all-inclusive government comprised proportionally of all parties that secure seats in upcoming elections.
The practice of winner takes all has failed us for over 60 years. The party that gets a simple majority of votes takes 100 percent of government ministries to the exclusion of another large party that secures close to 50 percent of the votes cast.
Many ‘fit and proper’ persons over time become selfish, power-drunk, rapacious politicians who hog all the power and many times abuse it. They have the mentality of ‘this ah we time; you had yours’, which is detrimental to Guyana’s development.
Jobs for the ‘boys’ results in misfits, charlatans, square pegs in round holes wielding power. In fact, so power-drunk some politicians are that they only consider, and wish for, power-sharing and constitutional reform when they are in the opposition. As soon as they get in Government, they abandon these noble ideas.
The result is that there is massive victimization, discrimination (racial, gender, geographical) and favouritism (cronyism, nepotism etc.) that cause some people to suffer while others enjoy the good life. This vicious cycle seems indefinite and those who suffer from the resulting collateral damage are always the poor and disconnected. In this 21st century, this practice must stop.
With the looming wealth from oil, greedy “wannabees” would do all they can to lure voters. There will be unachievable manifestos and empty promises just to get votes. As soon as they get in office, the phones will not be answered, the vehicle windows will be darkly tinted and the elusiveness will begin, while a chosen few will be facilitated.
Now is the right time for our political leaders to come together and negotiate for an inclusive government in which there is shared power, with ministries, departments, boards, commission and all decision-making bodies reflecting the races, genders and location of our peoples.
In addition, there should be equal opportunities in employment, scholarships and participation at all levels of existence. There will always be political patronage and the spoils system due to human nature. However, multi-partisan entities should prevail and merit should be the order of the day.
Editor, this does not have to be an elusive dream; it can become a reality if our politicians put our people and country first; if they truly serve instead of lording over people.
Sincerely,
Karan Chand
