Shaquille Duncan made an appearance Monday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus to answer a charge of armed robbery, after being detained when he was shot, allegedly during the course of a robbery.
Twenty-five year-old Duncan denied the allegation, which stated that while being in the company of another on February 5, 2019 and armed with a gun, he robbed Steve Munroe called ‘Pablo’ of one gold chain valued at $360,000.
An unrepresented Duncan, who resides at 1977 Festival City, went on to say that he works as an office assistant at the Ministry of Public Security.
According to reports, on the day in question, around 16:35hrs, Munroe was at a Super Bet Outlet on Mandela Avenue when two men who were allegedly trailing him, snatched the chain from off of his neck. One of the men was armed with a gun.
The defendant and the victim then got into a scuffle; however, Duncan managed to break free and attempted to escape with his accomplice. During the attempt to escape on a white XR motorcycle, public-spirited persons who had witnessed the robbery pursued them.
Duncan’s accomplice reportedly opened fire at their pursuers, but shot Duncan instead to his left shoulder. The accomplice managed to escape, leaving a wounded Duncan at the scene of the crime. He was detained and later handed over to the police where a report was made.
The accused was told of the offence and cautioned. He was placed in custody and the charge was later made out against him.
Police prosecutor Quinn Harris objected to bail being granted to Duncan under the grounds of the serious nature of the offence, the punishment it attracts, the prevalence of the offence and the fact that a firearm was used.
Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus then upheld the submission made by the prosecutor and refused bail for the defendant. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on March 4, 2019.
