There is a perfect storm on the horizon for the Industrial Hemp Industry as there is significant economic need to strive for job creation and Tax Revenue along with a strong demand for sustainable technologies, low carbon footprint housing, highly nutritious food and effective medicine with no side effects.
Industrial Hemp can provide many of these solutions.
Now that our economy suffers, isn’t it time to let our farmers take advantage of this unique profitable crop?
The Notion of Industrial Hemp as a narcotic is an outdated and highly debunked myth. Under our laws, there is no distinction between industrial hemp and marijuana although the Guyana Government in 1971 signed onto and agreed to the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic drugs of 1961 where a very-specific distinction has been made in the control of cannabis.
The stipulations ensured the exclusion of cannabis Sativa L Industrial Hemp from all cannabis legislations within member states.
Another benefit to consider is the fact that industrial hemp is an environmentally friendly cash crop. A range of studies has shown its many benefits.
Industrial Hemp can strive with minimal if any and all herbicides, fungicides and pesticides. It reinvigorates the soil, and it requires much less water than other crops.
Mr. Editor, consider the economic stimulus possible by legalizing the growing of industrial hemp. Guyana is not only running out on a sizable global market, but also limiting the livelihood of farmers, processors and fabrication by continuing to deny common sense in form of costly drug enforcement agendas.
Our economy could be revived and unemployed Guyana could benefit from a fresh emerging industry. Mr. President please legalize industrial hemp now for the “Good life” that you promised us.
Yours,
Thimbi Hendricks
