The Ministry of Public Infrastructure will be undertaking a standalone solar power project along parts of the Soesdyke-Linden highway. Six communities will be the beneficiary of this $15 million project that is expected to commence three months after the contract is signed.
The signing of this contract is expected to be done on March 26, 2019.
For a number of years, many have been very vocal about the absence of street lighting along the Soesdyke-Linden highway.
Many individuals travelling back and forth sometimes to Linden and Timehri, would lament on this issue from time to time. In addition, there are many who are also reminded of this as they make their way to Georgetown, after leaving the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, especially after dark.
On the other hand, there are some who are returning to their homeland and others who are visitors to Guyana that would add to that concern.
When Kaieteur News made contact with manager of traffic safety maintenance, Mr. Kester Hinds, he stated that it’s actually a small number of standalone lights that would be installed along the highway.
The question was asked, what initiated the initiative. He said that there has been the request from persons within that area.
“There is no Guyana Power and Light (GPL) network present. This, we know, would provide persons with electricity to aid in their daily lives.”
Mr. Hinds also made mention of the number of road fatalities that has taken place in the past and even in recent times.
“Not all accidents are as a result of the absence of street lights.” He also said that from the views of persons it is going to be a lot easier to use.
Many pedestrians are not visible when they are walking along the roadways, he noted.
This project surpassed the procurement entity threshold and was taken to the National Procurement and Tender and Administration Board (Tender Board) where it attracted bids.
A contract will be awarded to the contractors with the most cost effective price to execute the project.
